Wanted: AE for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing

Monday, April 5th, 2010

JAWRA Associate Editors (AE’s) serve as primary advisors to the JAWRA Editor. Responsibilities fall into two areas: reviews and subject development.

JAWRA receives 15-20 papers each year in this subject area. All manuscripts are handled with ScholarOne™ Manuscripts. The AE will be responsible for assigning reviewers and for making recommendations to the Editor based upon the reviews.

AE’s are encouraged to seek out qualified authors in their subject areas and encourage them to submit papers to JAWRA. These could be individual submittals or as featured collections of related papers organized around an introduction.

Associate Editorships are volunteer positions, with a term typically lasting 3 years. There is no payment, but AE’s are listed on the inside cover of JAWRA and receive our heartfelt thanks.

Individuals interested in applying this position should contact JAWRA Editor Ken Lanfear (editor@awra.org) at their earliest convenience.

Faisal Hossain is leaving :-(

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Faisal Hossain, JAWRA Associate Editor for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing, has asked to step down so he can focus more on other research areas such as satellite hydrology. During his tenure, Faisal has been perhaps one of our more influential AE’s. While shepherding through a number of excellent AI papers, he’s been an effective gatekeeper against many mundane “plug-and-chug” (Faisal’s great term!) applications of techniques. Faisal also recently completed a Featured Series on Satellite Hydrology, mentioned elsewhere in this blog.

Faisal, thank you for your contributions; we will miss you!

Faisal has graciously agreed to stay on until a replacement can be found. I don’t want to impose on him, so I will try to complete the recruitment and selection process as quickly as possible. Please watch for notices in this blog.

GIS papers

Monday, April 5th, 2010

The AWRA 2010 Specialty Conference on GIS and Water Resources, held last week in Orlando, FL, seems to have been an unusually productive one for finding leads on potential papers. Already, I’ve sent out 16 notes encouraging authors of posters or oral presentations to consider JAWRA. We’re also talking about as many as 3 Featured Collections. Well worth the trip!

GIS is a powerful tool, but you can spend a lot of time using it unproductively. I think we’re beginning to identify best practices in applying GIS. I look forward to JAWRA presenting examples in the future.
