Aguanomics: Engineers Doing It Right

David Zetland over at Aguanomics has a wonderful post, Engineers Doing It Right, about the Katrina disaster.

He begins:

Hurricane Katrina was not only a disaster in human, economic and political terms, it was also a disaster for the engineers who had worked to protect New Orleans (and the area) from weather that had no respect for the ambitions of man.

In the aftermath of the “failure” of many engineering works (and promises), the profession surely had a lot to learn and reflect upon.

I am happy to find that the profession has not shied away from turning a sharp eye onto itself, and these letters (sent by BB) attest to their careful examination.

He then provides excerpts from the letters by Professors Raymond B. Seed and R.G. Bea, both of UC-Berkeley. Both letters are also included.

Definitely worth reading – and contemplating.

Q: What’s the difference between doctors and engineers?
A: Doctors can only kill people just one at a time and they’re usually stopped after the first several.
(taken from Professor Raymond Seed’s letter)

It was back in the late 80s when I was dating a man who said he wanted to return to Bourbon St. one last time – he said it would not be there much longer. He took his new lady friend with him to Bourbon St.

It was the early 90s when another associate was provided with lamp posts that came from Bourbon St. He would not say how he came across them.

It was 1991 when Wilbert Swieso, who had already invested 40 yrs into secretly altering the valley’s water system, told me that Alan Autry would be coming from LA to Fresno, CA to fulfill an elected position. An actor (Bubba on “Heat of the Night”) with no experience? Mayor Alan Autry 2000-2008 wanted recognition for all his efforts behind the city’s water infrastructure upgrade. Where Swieso was tying in illegal and unauthorized lines for what he said was upcoming water diversion. Upon reporting this nightmare, Mayor Autry had a R.O. issued against me – death threats followed if I continue to report this. Swieso is also linked to the former boyfriend and contractor mentioned above.

And now CA is being warned that we are likely facing a Katrina-like disaster due to weakening levees. Naturally more money is needed. What about all the money invested into destroying and WEAKENING our water infrastructure? Why isn’t this being looked into before a disaster covers up all the evidence of what has been done in preparation for where this is headed. (Could there be a connection to what took place in LA?)
