Regular readers of AWRA’s e-newsletter, Connections, know that I occasionally pose a question or make a request that is water related, but in more of a tangential, non-technical way. Together we have created a long list of films with water as a theme, setting, plot device, or even a character. We have also created a diverse and extensive playlist of songs having to do with water for your iPod or other tune-bearing device. Feel free to visit those old lists and add some fresh movies or tunes to the lists via the comments.
In the June issue of Connections, I needed some help figuring out where to spend a long weekend in September. The essence of my request was:
I’m planning a long weekend get-away in early September, and I need some inspiration. What are your vacation plans this summer? Or, what has been the most unexpectedly good vacation you’ve taken recently? I’m looking for someplace with water (naturally), that won’t be too cold, in the continental US, with plenty of outdoor activities/sightseeing/natural wonders as well as great food.
The winner (as determined solely by me) would receive the coveted AWRA embroidered t-shirt.
And, boy … did you guys deliver! I was astonished by the sheer number of responses, and with the care and detail everyone provided when suggesting their favorite vacation spot. My decision was extremely difficult, but here it is: I couldn’t decide!
Ultimately, I settled on my four favorite suggestions:
Falls Creek State Park, TN (Leah Tomlinson)
Acadia National Park, ME (Lee Carbonneau)
Missoula, MT (Bryce Contor)
Wisconsin Dells, WI (Shawn Simpson)
Leah, Lee, Bryce, and Shawn … your t-shirts are on the way.
You can take a look the winning suggestions, and all the responses here. Then, if your favorite place to vacation isn’t mentioned, add it in the comments below. There is so much collective vacation wisdom out there, and so many wonderful places to visit, I intend to make it my life’s work to see and do as much as I can from this list!
To me, there has always been a sense of joy in returning to my favorite vacation spots year after year. The kids get in the groove quickly, you develop a feeling of homecoming upon your arrival … looking forward to that particular pizza place, and that special kayak spot where dolphins swim right up to you … you know what I mean. But, with vacation time so limited, and the vast number of places that must be seen, it’s time to break out of my vacation rut.
Thank you, everyone, for inspiring me to think big!
